Fellowships

START is dedicated to working with graduate students and young researchers in the behavioral and social sciences who are interested in issues related to terrorism and providing them with professional development opportunities.

One program focused on ensuring that young researchers are provided with such opportunities is the annual START Fellowship Program. This program is available to graduate students and those who have completed graduate school within the last five years. Those selected to be Fellows are provided with $5,000 to dedicate towards research expenses and professional development experiences to support their work in the area of terrorism studies.

All Fellows participate in the Annual Meeting of START researchers, held each year in June in College Park, MD. (The 2008 meeting will be held from June 15 through June 18.) Fellows are required to attend the Annual Meeting at the beginning of their Fellowship period, during which time they will meet with scholars from across the country and around the world who are working on related research projects. Fellows are also required to attend the annual meeting at the end of their fellowship period, at which they will present findings from the research conducted during their Fellowship year. START covers the costs of Fellows’ travel to and from and participation in these meetings.

Each Fellow will work closely with individual mentors, members of the START research consortium. Mentors will involve Fellows in their own START-related research, will supervise Fellows’ research, and will help develop plans for using the Fellowship award to advance the Fellow’s educational and research goals.
