Incident Summary:
11/1/2000: Unidentified assailants threw a Molotov cocktail at the window and outer wall of Beth Shalom Synagogue in west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. There were no reported injuries as a result of the attack; however, the synagogue suffered minor damages. A second synagogue in the area, Beth Israel, was firebombed two hours after Beth Shalom. No group claimed responsibility for either attack, but one man was taken into custody for the Beth Shalom incident. Specific motive is unknown; however, there has been an escalation in attacks against Canadian Jewish facilties as tensions increase in the Middle East.

Criteria
Criteria 1
The act must be aimed at attaining a political, economic, religious, or social goal. In terms of economic goals, the exclusive pursuit of profit does not satisfy this criterion. It must involve the pursuit of more profound, systemic economic change.
Criterion 2
There must be evidence of an intention to coerce, intimidate, or convey some other message to a larger audience (or audiences) than the immediate victims. Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack.
