Recent briefings and work with government and professional organizations

Over the past couple of months, START has briefed and worked with several government agencies and professional organizations.

Most recently, START’s Executive Director William Braniff offered a briefing for a delegation of Supreme Court judges, General Prosecutor Office officials, and high-level practitioners and policymakers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. The American Bar Association reached out to START to brief the delegation as a part of the United Nations Office of Drug and Crime’s efforts to their  strengthen capacities to address terrorism-related issues at the national level while respecting the rule of law.

START has also recently worked with the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) and Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) and the National Suspicious Activity Reporting (SAR) Initiative.

  • START is helping to shape and will serve as a facilitator for a FLETC and DOJ/COPS event, the National Summit on Empowering Communities to Prevent Violent Extremism, to take place this August.
  • For NCTC, START recently facilitated a session on terrorist narratives and strategies at a workshop on Net Assessment.
  • In working with the National SAR Initiative team, START will help validate its current set of indicators using several datasets (the American Terrorism Study and the Extremist Crime Database) maintained by members of the START Consortium.
