| First mentioned in March 2006, the Sami al-Ghul Brigades is one of several active armed factions of the Palestinian nationalist organization al-Fatah. Though al-Fatah has never publicly acknowledged any connection to these groups, it is believed that al-Fatah uses these splinter factions to simultaneously terrorize Israel while participating in legitimate politics under the premise that it does not use violent means to achieve its objectives.

| With Israel's July 2006 incursion into the Gaza Strip, the political situation surrounding the Palestinian territories is all but certain. The Sami al-Ghul Brigades has conducted several attacks in the last several months and it is assumed that the group will continue to actively operate. | |
