Research Roundtable: Policing Left Wing Extremism in India

START's Research Round Table Series feat. Dr. Jyoti BelurTerrorism scholar Jyoti Belur will discuss her most recent project “Policing Left Wing Extremism in India” at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 in Symons Hall, Room 3121.

The lecture is part of START’s Research Round Table Series that features speakers from industry and academia, addressing a broad range of topics related to terrorism studies and homeland security.

Belur is a research associate at the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Research at University College London, U.K. After obtaining a master’s degree in economics from the University of Mumbai, she joined the Indian Police Service and served as a senior police officer in the North of India for several years. While undergoing police training, she completed her second master’s degree in police management at Osmania University. Belur also holds a third master’s degree in human rights from the University of Essex, as well as a doctorate degree from the London School of Economics.

In 2010, her doctoral thesis was published as a monograph titled “Permission to Shoot?: Police Use of Deadly Force in Democracies.” She’s currently working on a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship research project called, “Countering Naxalite Terrorism in India: Police Perspectives.”
