Monique Mitchell Turner received her Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1999 where she studied persuasion. Turner is currently an associate professor in the Department of Communication, and is the Director of the Center for Risk Communication Research at the University of Maryland. Dr. Turner's research program centers on how emotion impacts the way individuals' process risk related information. She has published numerous articles on this issue, for example, "Using Emotion to Communicate Risk Effectively: The Anger Activism Model" (In press with Public Relations Review), "Comparing the influence of parents and peers on the choice to use drugs: A meta-analytic summary of the literature" (published in Criminal Justice and Behavior, 30, 163-186), and "Changing college students'perceptions of their risk for genital warts: The effects of discreet emotion and message framing" (published in Communication Studies, 52, 141-152). Turner also collaborates with the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition by teaching a course in risk communication. Turner is outgoing chair of the Communication and Social Cognition Division of the National Communication Association and is the current associate editor of Communication Research Reports.
