Incident Summary:

06/28/1999: Approximately 50 Shining Path members, armed with rifles, attacked a military base in Llanco, Junin Department, Colombia. The firefight lasted for about 45 minutes and ended when the perpetrators retreated as several patrols of the Police Unit for Special Services began to arrive at the base. Corporal Geni Lopez Espiritu was seriously wounded in the attack, and authorities suspected that the Shining Path rebels suffered casualties as well.
