Incident Summary:

09/21/2001: Around 12:30 p.m. Mark Anthony Stroman shot Rais Bhuiyan, a Bangladeshi immigrant who was working at a gas station in Dallas, Texas, United States. Bhuiyan survived a gunshot wound to the head, but was left blind in one eye. Stroman, a white supremacist and self-described former member of Aryan Brotherhood, targeted Bhuiyan because he perceived him to be Middle Eastern and intended to retaliate for the recent al Qa'ida attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001.This was the second of three armed assaults carried out by Stroman in less than three weeks. He was arrested on October 5, 2001 and ultimately convicted, sentenced, and executed on July 20, 2011.

Additional Information Stroman reportedly planned at least one additional attack, targeting a mall in Dallas with automatic weapons. Bhuiyan was outspoken in his efforts to prevent Stroman's execution. His request made it to the U.S. Supreme Court, where Justice Antonin Scalia turned it down. Bhuiyan became a U.S. citizen in 2010.
