Incident Summary:

06/20/2016: Assailants hijacked a tugboat and held 13 Indonesian crew members hostage in the Sulu Sea of the Philippines. At least three crew members were abducted while the remaining ten hostages were freed on the same day. This was one of two coordinated attacks on the same tugboat on the same day, across which seven crew members were abducted. Two of the hostages escaped on August 17, 2016. Three hostages were released on October 1, 2016. The final two hostages were released on December 12, 2016. The Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) claimed responsibility for the incident and demanded a ransom in exchange for the victims.
