Incident Summary:

11/20/2018: Assailants opened fire on Chakama trading centre in Kilifi, Kenya. Five civilians were injured and Silvia Costanza Romano was abducted in the attack. Romano, an Italian Africa Milele Onlus NGO volunteer, was released on May 9, 2020. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the incident and stated that Romano converted to Islam in captivity because "she saw with her own eyes a better world than the one she previously knew."
