Incident Summary:

03/05/2019: An assailant armed with a ceramic knife stabbed guards at a prison in Conde-sur-Sarthe, Normandy, France. Two guards were injured in the attack. Both the assailant and his partner were shot by police after they barricaded themselves and his partner later died of her wounds. Michael Chiolo, an unaffiliated individual, claimed responsibility for the incident and stated that he carried out the suicide attack in retaliation for the death of Cherif Chekatt, the perpetrator of the December 2018 Strasbourg attack. Chekatt had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
