Incident Summary:

11/03/2019: Assailants stopped two boats and abducted 10 people, including five Indian construction workers and Member of Parliament (MP) U Whei Tin near the Kyauktan jetty on the Kaladan river, Kyauktaw, Rakhine, Myanmar. One hostage died in captivity, while eight hostages were released the following day on November 4, 2019. MP Tin was released January 21, 2020. Arakan Army (AA) claimed responsibility for the incident, claiming they did not know that the Indians would be travelling in the are that day and had detained them for security reasons. The group had detained MP U Hwai Tin in order to interrogate him for his possible role as a military informant.
