Incident Summary:

09/05/2000: A top leader of Pakistan's main fundamentalist Jammat-i-Islami party, Dr. Muhammad Ismail, was gunned down in his car. Four unidentified gunmen traveling in a car overtook Dr. Ismail's car at a toll booth on a road near Arifwala town, about 100 miles southeast of Punjab province capital Lahore. The perpetrators fired automatic weapons into Dr. Ismail's car. Dr. Ismail's other family members in the car were not harmed. The gunmen immediately fled in their car. Police suspected that it was an act to trigger political and/or sectarian instability in Pakistan.
