Incident Summary:

10/04/2001: Mark Anthony Stroman shot Vasudev Patel, a Hindu man from India, who was working at a gas station in Mesquite, Texas, United States. The assailant was armed with a .44-caliber chrome-plated pistol and initially demanded money from the register. When Patel reached for a gun under the counter, Stroman shot the man in the chest. Stroman, a white supremacist and self-described former member of Aryan Brotherhood, targeted Patel because he perceived him to be Middle Eastern and intended to retaliate for the recent al Qa'ida attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. This was the last of three armed assaults carried out by Stroman in less than three weeks. He was arrested on October 5, 2001 and ultimately convicted, sentenced, and executed on July 20, 2011.
