01/01/2013: Assailants detonated an explosive device at a Joint Task Force (JTF) checkpoint in Maiduguri city, Borno state, Nigeria. At least one soldier and 13 assailants were killed in the ensuing firefight; at least two people were also injured. Officials attribute the attack to Boko Haram.
