Incident Summary:

07/19/2016: Assailants opened fire on a Malian Army base in Nampala, Segou, Mali. At least 17 soldiers were killed and 35 others were injured in the assault. Additionally, five soldiers were abducted; the hostages were killed during an attempted rescue operation on October 24, 2017. Ansar al-Dine (Mali) claimed responsibility for the incident and stated that it was holding five soldiers hostage in a video posted on August 4, 2016. The National Alliance for the Protection of the Fulani Identity and the Restoration of Justice (ANSIPRJ) separately claimed responsibility for the incident. Sources also attributed the attack to the Macina Liberation Front (FLM).
