The Berkley Center for Religion, Peace & World Affairs at Georgetown University hosted "Religious Freedom and Extremism: Lessons from the Arab Spring," an all-day symposium that featured START researcher and University of Maryland Associate Professor Johanna Kristin Birnir.

In it, Birnir discussed how repression breeds religious extremism.
