Incident Summary:
01/16/1997: Around 9:30 a.m. a bomb detonated outside the Atlanta Northside Family Planning Services in the Sandy Springs area of Atlanta, Georgia, United States. This was the first of two related attacks at this location. A second bomb detonated near the building 45 minutes later, targeting first responders. The first explosion did not cause any casualties, but did blow a hole in the wall of the building. In 2005, Eric Rudolph was convicted and sentenced to four life terms for carrying out this attack and others, including the Centennial Olympic Park bombing in July 1996 and a bombing at a gay and lesbian bar in February 1997. A letter signed "Army of God," sent after the bombing at the gay bar, referenced this attack and confirmed that the clinic was the target, noting anti-abortion and anti-gay motivations.

Criteria 1
The act must be aimed at attaining a political, economic, religious, or social goal. In terms of economic goals, the exclusive pursuit of profit does not satisfy this criterion. It must involve the pursuit of more profound, systemic economic change.

Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack. For example, in a typical successful bombing, the bomb detonates and destroys property and/or kills individuals, whereas an unsuccessful bombing is one in which the bomb is discovered and defused or detonates early and kills the perpetrators. Success is not judged in terms of the larger goals of the perpetrators. For example, a bomb that exploded in a building would be counted as a success even if it did not, for example, succeed in bringing the building down or inducing government repression.
