Incident Summary:

04/12/1998: A female cadre believed to be from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) lobbed a grenade into a crowded marketplace in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. One civilian was killed and at least 15 were injured in the explosion. The incident happened days before the Sri Lankan New Year. The area was already on high alert, in case the rebels staged an attack during the holiday. The LTTE denies responsibility for the attack.
