05/18/1999: Perpetrators suspected to belong to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) fired mortars and rockets at two Philippine Army posts located in the town of Buldon. Philippine Army forces counterattacked, resulting in an hour-long gun battle. There were no casualties in this incident.

Additional Information The Philippine government had been holding peace negotiations with both Islamic and Communist rebels during the time of the attacks. Formal talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), fighting for a separate Islamic state, had yet to start with the group and Manila was still ironing out differences on the venue of the meetings. Although MILF did not claim responsibility for the attacks, the government believed that they were responsible.
