Incident Summary:

09/17/1999: Members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) used firearms, gasoline, knives and swords to attack Sinhalese civilians in Punchisigiriya, Sri Lanka. An unknown number of people were injured, 54 were killed and three houses were burned down. Police believe that the attack was an act of vengeance for an air raid on September 15, 1999, which killed 21 Tamils and wounded another 35. The majority of the perpetrators were women.
