02/22/2000: A local Spanish Socialist Party leader, Fernando Buesa Blanco, and his bodyguard were killed in a car bomb attack in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque country, Spain. The Euskadi ta Askatasuna (ETA) was suspected responsible for the assassination. Fernando Buesa, the leader of the Alava provincial chapter of the Socialist Party, opposed Basque independence.
