Incident Summary:

05/01/2000: On May 1, 2000, the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) took 7 United Nations peacekeepers hostage north of Freetown, Sierra Leone. They continued to abduct over 500 hostages and kept many in their custody until May 28, 2000. As the month came to an end the last 85 peacekeepers were released. The hostages ranged from a variety of countries. The United Nations believed that four peacekeepers that were never found were killed during this time.
