Incident Summary:

1/17/2001: Hisham Mikki, the head of the official Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) and an associate of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, was shot and killed by three masked gunmen as he dined in a restaurant in Gaza, Gaza Strip, West Bank and Gaza Strip. The Palestinian government accused the Israeli government of involvement in the incident; the Israeli government denied any connection. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack; the statement indicated that President Arafat had failed to punish corruption and that the death of Mikki was the ruling of the people.
