Incident Summary:

2/17/2001: Unidentified assailants ambushed Rashid Omar Ali, the Chake Chake District Secretary of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, while he was riding his motorcycle on Pemba Island, Zanzibar, Tanzania. The assailants set up a makeshift roadblock and attacked Ali with machetes when he stopped at the roadblock; he was killed in the assault. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
