Incident Summary:

10/16/2001: Unidentified gunmen shot and killed Jorge Eliecer Meneses, Liberal Party member and former congressman, after kidnapping him and his brother from Meneses' ranch in Pailitas, Cesar province, Colombia. His brother was later released. Although no group claimed responsibility for the attack, authorities believed that the United Self Defense Units of Colombia (AUC) was responsible as they claimed responsibility for similar attacks that occurred shortly before this one.
