Incident Summary:

02/24/2002: Presidential candidate, Senator Ingrid Betancourt and campaign manager Clara Rojas were kidnapped by Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) members while traveling from Florencia to the town of San Vicente del Caguan, Colombia. Three civilians traveling with the Senator were set free. Rojas, along with a former congresswoman who had been abducted in 2001, was released in a humanitarian rescue mission on January 10, 2008. Senator Betancourt, along with 14 other hostages including three Americans, was rescued in a Colombian military operation on July 2, 2008.

Additional Information The former congresswoman who was released along with Clara Rojas was Consuelo Gonzalez, abducted in 2001. The Americans who were freed in the rescue operation along with Senator Betancourt were former Defense Department contract workers working for Northrup Grumman--Marc Gonsalves, Keith Stansell and Thomas Howes. They had been captured in 2003 following a plane crash while on a counternarcotics operation.
