Incident Summary:

9/5/2002: At least two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on a vehicle being driven by Fernando Mancilla as he drove through Medellin, Antioquia Department, Colombia. Mancilla was killed in the attack. He had recently been appointed to head Colombia's secret police (DAS) and was scheduled to be formally sworn in just hours after the attack. Authorities speculate that the attack was perpetrated by the Medellin cocaine cartel, but do not rule out the possibility that it was politically motivated.
