Incident Summary:

07/08/2004: Suspected Iraqi insurgents detonated a car bomb and then fired mortar shells at a joint U.S.-Iraqi military building in Samarra, Iraq. The attack destroyed the building and damaged nearby structures, and killed five U.S. soldiers, two Iraqi guardsmen, and three Iraqi civilians in surrounding homes. Twenty U.S. soldiers and four Iraqi guardsman were injured in the attack. At least four suspected insurgents were also killed in the ensuing firefight after the initial bombing and mortar strikes.
