Incident Summary:

08/02/2004: Two gunmen attempted to assassinate the chief minister of Pakistan's Balochistan province, Jam Muhammed Yousef. The assailants, who were hiding in the mountains, fired on the chief minister's motorcade in the town of Ingeera, about 310 kilometers south of the provincial capital of Quetta. Police officers with the chief minister fired back, and reportedly killed one of the gunmen. According to reports, the other gunmen was arrested. While Yousef was unhurt, one police officer died in the attack and another was injured. Authorities suspected that the attack was carried out by nationalists in the province rather than Al-Qaida, which had claimed responsibility for an assassination attempt on Pakistan's Prime Minister-designate last week.
