Incident Summary:

06/03/2005: Municipal Councilor Mohammed Ashraf, a member of the main opposition National Conference, was killed in the city of Srinagar of Indian Kashmir while on the way to his municipal office. He was gunned down by suspected Muslim rebels in an ongoing string of political assassinations that had been going on in the area, which continued the 15-year long insurrection in Indian Kashmir. Militants had previously threatened those who participated in elections and had succeeded in assassinating several elected officials already.
