Incident Summary:
10/16/2008: On Thursday morning at 1000, a Taliban suicide bomber targeting district police chief Shirin Khan detonated an improvised explosive device that was strapped to his body at the front gate of the district administrative police center in Ali Sher district, Khost province, Afghanistan. The suicide bombing attack injured one Afghan policeman and a security guard and caused minimal damage to the gate and the police center. District police chief Shirin Khan escaped unharmed from the attack. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the incident on behalf of the group.

Successful Attack
Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack. For example, in a typical successful bombing, the bomb detonates and destroys property and/or kills individuals, whereas an unsuccessful bombing is one in which the bomb is discovered and defused or detonates early and kills the perpetrators. Success is not judged in terms of the larger goals of the perpetrators. For example, a bomb that exploded in a building would be counted as a success even if it did not, for example, succeed in bringing the building down or inducing government repression.
