Initial reports were mixed regarding the cause of the explosion, which injured one person and dented the ship's hull but did not cause major damage. The Abdullah Azzam Brigades claimed responsibility for the explosion on jihadist websites, and authorities confirmed the presence of homemade explosives on the hull of the ship suggesting it was attacked using an explosives-laden vessel.
