Incident Summary:
02/16/2011: On Wednesday evening at 1400, on Tantuniciye Street in Sevket Sumer neighborhood of Mersin, Turkey, two unknown men threw a Molotov cocktail into a restaurant that had not given into pressure to close its doors to protest PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan's imprisonment on the anniversary of his capture in Kenya in 1999. The attack severely wounded a 45-year-old man, Suphi Beylen, as he was eating diner and resulted in an unknown amount of property damage to the restaurant. No group claimed responsibility, but Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK / Kongra GEL) Protestors were suspected in an attempt to create tension and chaos in the country and thereby influence voters ahead of the June 12 general elections. Authorities arrested the two men shortly following the attack.

Criteria 1

Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack. For example, in a typical successful bombing, the bomb detonates and destroys property and/or kills individuals, whereas an unsuccessful bombing is one in which the bomb is discovered and defused or detonates early and kills the perpetrators. Success is not judged in terms of the larger goals of the perpetrators. For example, a bomb that exploded in a building would be counted as a success even if it did not, for example, succeed in bringing the building down or inducing government repression.
