07/01/2016: Assailants opened fire on a passenger bus on the highway between El Wak and War Gedud in El Wak district, Mandera, Kenya. This was one of two attacks targeting buses on the same highway on this date. At least 20 people were injured across both assaults. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility and stated that the incidents were carried out in retaliation for alleged military operations on mosques in Mombasa. Officials, however, questioned the veracity of this claim.
