Incident Summary:
09/22/2016: Assailants attacked Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) soldiers and residents in Kananga, Kasai-Central, Democratic Republic of the Congo. At least 49 people, including 16 soldiers, six civilians, and 27 assailants, were killed and an unknown number of other people were injured between this attack and an incident in the same city the following day. No group claimed responsibility; however, sources attributed the attack to the Kamwina Nsapu Militia.

Criteria 1
The act must be aimed at attaining a political, economic, religious, or social goal. In terms of economic goals, the exclusive pursuit of profit does not satisfy this criterion. It must involve the pursuit of more profound, systemic economic change.

Successful Attack
Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack. For example, in a typical successful bombing, the bomb detonates and destroys property and/or kills individuals, whereas an unsuccessful bombing is one in which the bomb is discovered and defused or detonates early and kills the perpetrators. Success is not judged in terms of the larger goals of the perpetrators.
