01/16/2017: Assailants abducted civilians from Bodumanupakalu, Andhra Pradesh, India. This was one of three related kidnappings on the same date. Six civilians were abducted across the attacks. Five hostages were released on January 17, 2017; the fate of the remaining hostage is unknown. No group claimed responsibility for the incident; however, sources attributed the attack to the Communist Party of India - Maoist (CPI-Maoist).

Criteria 1
The act must be aimed at attaining a political, economic, religious, or social goal. In terms of economic goals, the exclusive pursuit of profit does not satisfy this criterion. It must involve the pursuit of more profound, systemic economic change.
