Incident Summary:
09/01/2017: An explosive device detonated targeting first responders at a khat market in Af Urur, Sanaag, Somalia. This was one of two coordinated bombings at the market within a short period of time. At least ten people, including soldiers and civilians, were killed and 35 people were injured across both blasts. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the incidents.

Criteria 1
The act must be aimed at attaining a political, economic, religious, or social goal. In terms of economic goals, the exclusive pursuit of profit does not satisfy this criterion. It must involve the pursuit of more profound, systemic economic change.

Successful Attack
Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack. Success is not judged in terms of the larger goals of the perpetrators.
