02/16/2018: Assailants attempted to hijack the MV Kudos cargo ship and kidnap the crew in the waters between Sibago Island and Coco Island, Tuburan, Basilan, Philippines. The attack was repelled, but one crew member was wounded in the ensuing clash. No group claimed responsibility for the incident; however, sources attributed the incident to the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).

Criteria 1
The act must be aimed at attaining a political, economic, religious, or social goal. In terms of economic goals, the exclusive pursuit of profit does not satisfy this criterion. It must involve the pursuit of more profound, systemic economic change.

Successful Attack
Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack.
