Incident Summary:
05/10/2018: Three assailants armed with firearms and knives attacked Imam Hussain Mosque, a Shia mosque, on Old Main Road, Ottawa, Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. At least one person was killed and two others were injured in the assault. The mosque was also set on fire. No group claimed responsibility; however, sources attributed the attack to a group that supported the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and noted that the leader of the group, Farhad Hoomer, contained ISIL propaganda and a picture of him wearing an ISIL beanie on his phone.

Criteria 1

Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack.
