Incident Summary:

05/24/2018: Assailants opened fire on Zaldy Mallari at his shop in Labben, Cagayan, Philippines. Mallari, a Allacapan town councilor and the former police chief, was killed in the attack. The New People's Army (NPA) claimed responsibility for the incident and stated that Zaldy Mallari was targeted because he committed war crimes and human rights abuses while he was the Allacapan police chief from 2011 to 2013. The NPA also accused Mallari of acquiring land illegally and being a government informant.
