Incident Summary:

03/26/2020: Assailants abducted Soumaila Cisse, a Malian opposition leader and presidential candidate, and eight members of his campaign team in Niafunke, Timbuktu, Mali. A driver was killed and two others were injured in the attack. The members of his team were released as of April 3, 2020, while Cisse was released on Ooctober 8, 2020. Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) claimed responsibility for the incident and stated that Cisse refused to negotiate with the group when the Malian president proposed peace talks.
