Incident Summary:

08/18/2020: Members of the Malian military staged a coup and abducted at least 19 government officials, including President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse, in Bamako, Mali. At least four people were killed and 15 people were injured in the attack. Two officials were released as of August 21, 2020, and Keita was released on August 27, 2020. The remaining hostages were released on October 7, 2020. Colonel Assimi Goita, the leader of the National Committee for the Salvation of the People, claimed responsibility for the incident and stated "By making this intervention, we have put Mali first" and "Mali is in a sociopolitical and security crisis, There is no more room for mistakes." The group also promised elections in a "reasonable time" and forced President Keita to resign on a television broadcast the following day.
