Incident Summary:
10/29/2020: An assailant armed with a knife attacked civilians outside the Notre-Dame de L’Assomption Basilica in Nice, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France. Three people were killed in the attack, and the assailant was shot and injured before being arrested by police. Al-Mahdi in Southern Tunisia claimed responsibility for the incident and stated that the attack was carried out in retaliation for caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed. The group stated that they provided training for and prepared the assailant, Brahim Aouissaoui. Authorities stated that they found photos linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on Aouissaoui's phone, along with a recording in which he describes France as "a country of unbelievers." There were also photos of the perpetrator of the attack that killed Samuel Paty on October 16, 2020.

Criteria
Criteria 1
The act must be aimed at attaining a political, economic, religious, or social goal. In terms of economic goals, the exclusive pursuit of profit does not satisfy this criterion. It must involve the pursuit of more profound, systemic economic change.
Criterion 2
There must be evidence of an intention to coerce, intimidate, or convey some other message to a larger audience (or audiences) than the immediate victims. Successful Attack
Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack. For example, in a typical successful bombing, the bomb detonates and destroys property and/or kills individuals, whereas an unsuccessful bombing is one in which the bomb is discovered and defused or detonates early and kills the perpetrators. Success is not judged in terms of the larger goals of the perpetrators. For example, a bomb that exploded in a building would be counted as a success even if it did not, for example, succeed in bringing the building down or inducing government repression.
