Through curricular and experiential learning, START educates, mentors and trains the next generation of national security scholars and practitioners.

Past Programs

START continually seeks to provide the best training and development opportunities to students interested in Terrorism Studies and Homeland Security. As such, START works to update programs regularly. When programs are replaced or retired, details about them can be found on the pages listed below.

  • Terrorism Research Award: The Terrorism Research Award (formerly known as the START Pre- and Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program) provided financial support and mentorship to current PhD students and recent PhDs.
  • Undergraduate Research Program: The Undergraduate Research Program provided financial support, professional development, and mentorship to current undergraduate students working with START Researchers.
  • Career Development Programs: Career Development Programs focused a small number of University of Maryland students on one topic, of particular relevance to Terrorism Studies and the Homeland Security Enterprise. Students received specialized academic and career training to prepare them for jobs in the field after graduation from University of Maryland.
