START Journeys: Alumni in Focus | Carimaxy Benitez

Carimaxy Benitez

Tell me a little about your background.

I’m originally from New York, and I moved to the D.C. area in 2017 for a job in law enforcement. I spent eight years as a police officer in D.C., working in Special Operations. My focus was on planning and logistics for major security events, including movements for foreign dignitaries and even the President. In 2021, I started the MPS program with START and graduated in May 2024. I recently transitioned into a Program Manager role with the U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms, Office of Security, Emergency Preparedness, and Continuity.

What are your professional or academic goals?

Professionally, I want to continue advancing in the security field, specifically into leadership positions where I can help shape strategy and policy for major operations. Academically, I hope to eventually pursue a doctoral degree in security or intelligence, to deepen my expertise and continue growing.

Why did you choose START? What aspects of our program appealed to you?

I wanted to complement my operational experience with a deeper academic understanding of terrorism and security. I chose START because it combines high-quality research with real-world application. The Global Terrorism Database, in particular, showed me the value of open-source data in this field, and that really motivated me to join the program.

Where are you now? How has START helped you achieve your goals?

Right now, I’m a Program Manager with the U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms, Office of Security, Emergency Preparedness, and Continuity. START gave me credibility beyond my law enforcement background. It gave me valuable skills I carry in my role, particularly in critical thinking, research, and writing. The program helped me look at security from a broader, more strategic perspective, which has strengthened the way I approach problems and make decisions.

What was your favorite or most memorable moment at START? Did you have a favorite class at START? What was something interesting you learned?

For me, it wasn’t one single moment, it was more the experience of realizing how much I’d grown by the end of the program. I remember looking back at my earlier work compared to what I produced for my capstone, and it showed me how much my writing, analysis, and perspective had developed.

What advice would you give to someone looking to advance their professional or academic goals?

I’d say be intentional about building both your practical experience and your academic foundation. The two really complement each other. Also, don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Networking is key in this field. Connecting with professionals and mentors opens doors and gives you perspectives you might not get otherwise.
