START researcher invited to discuss terrorists' motivations

John Jay College has invited START researcher Arie Kruglanski to present his research findings during a special seminar this February hosted by the school's Center on Terrorism. Kruglanski will discuss motivations of terrorists and their quest for significance in "Terrorism: A (Self) Love Story." The seminar will explain Kruglanksi's argument that certain social and political circumstances may motivate individuals to participate in terrorist activities.

Kruglanski is a distinguished professor in Psychology at the University of Maryland. Throughout his career as a social psychologist, his interests have centered on how people form judgments, beliefs, impressions and attitudes, and what consequences this has for their interpersonal relations and group interactions. In connection with these interests, he formulated a theory of lay epistemics to explain cognitive and motivational behaviors. Kruglanski has published more than 270 books, articles and chapters. He was appointed a START researcher in 2004.
