Terrorism and Targeted Violence (T2V) in the United States: Workplace Violence

As we near the conclusion of Workplace Violence Awareness Month, it is important to highlight the prevalence of workplace violence in the United States and to support the development of prevention programs in this space based on robust scientific analysis. According to the Terrorism and Targeted Violence (T2V) in the United States database, there were 271 premeditated workplace violence events from January 1, 2023, through December 31, 2025. Nearly 70% of these events were successful, resulting in 102 victim deaths and 109 victim injuries. This new research brief analyzes incident rates, locations, affected industries and victim characteristics, weapon types, perpetrator motives and outcomes, and key perpetrator characteristics. Breach From Within: Introduction to Insider Risk and Threats
START’s new Coursera MOOC, “Breach From Within: Introduction to Insider Risk and Threats,” offers a human-centered take on insider risk often missing from traditional security training. In about 3 hours, you’ll explore how insider risk develops, key behavioral and organizational drivers, how incidents can escalate beyond data breaches, and ethical, proactive prevention approaches—plus earn a shareable certificate.

The START Consortium is dedicated to generating knowledge of the human causes and consequences of terrorism. Applying rigorous standards to both research and education, START seeks to illuminate one of the most highly politicized and understudied phenomena in the social sciences for students, practitioners and policymakers. Funded primarily through research grants to date, START is seeking to generate an endowment that will provide the flexibility and autonomy to ensure that it can continue to serve as an objective source of data and empirically based analysis into the future.
